This $1.2 million project on the north side of Gansevoort Peninsula, located in the Hudson River Park, between Gansevoort Street and Little West 12th Street. Is part of the salt marsh created in the redevelopment of the peninsula. Where the client hired Billon Oyster Project to fill 227 gabion baskets seeded and unseeded oyster shells. Along with seeding 73 reef balls varying in size from small, medium and large. These gabion baskets and reef balls were then transport via barge from Billon Oyster Projects location in Red Hook, Brooklyn. That were then set into Hudson River with divers to create submerged habit on the North side of the peninsula.
The focus of the project is to create a habitat for an educational area where the public can learn about intertidal ecosystems. In addition to help revitalize the oyster population within New York’s waterways. The project was designed with environmental aspects to allow for oyster population regenerate itself over time. That will also increase the bio-diversity of the Hudson with marine species. This type of project is not typical seen in Manhattan near the shorelines and overtime it will help to also restore the waters of the Hudson River. This submerge habit serves as wave brake to the salt marsh that was established on the North shoreline of the peninsula.
Gansevoort Peninsula is Trevon’s latest addition to the Hudson River Park which was completed in 2022. It is located between South side of Pier 55 (little island) and the North side of the Gansevoort Peninsula is part the salt marsh, a first of it kind on the Hudson River.
