The story of Trevcon Construction is inseparable from that of the revitalization of New York and New Jersey’s waterfronts over the past 30 years. Trevcon has been so enmeshed in the changes that have transformed our regional coastlines in recent decades that it’s nearly impossible to the separate the success of one from the success of the other.
At the time government and industry were looking to reimagine and reinvest in the region’s waterfronts came Trevcon Construction, a new marine contractor uniquely equipped to make those plans a reality, faster and more efficiently than others in the market.
What is now the region’s preeminent marine/heavy civil contractor in the New York City metropolitan region began as a small utility contractor based in New Jersey. Trevcon Construction was founded by Ronald Treveloni, Sr. – known as Ron, Sr. – in 1987, following years of experience managing large infrastructure projects for multinational firms.
The company focused mostly on watermain and sewer construction, but as those projects increasingly required construction into and under New Jersey’s coastal waters, the company began to lay the foundation for its future success as a marine contractor: working from barges, employing union dockbuilders/divers, and driving piles. Just as Trevcon was getting its feet wet in marine construction in New Jersey with its first pier rehab project in Hoboken, NJ in the late 1990’s, New York City was drawing up plans to rebuild its waterfront, and Ron, Sr. saw an opportunity. The timing was right for Trevcon to cross the Hudson River into New York.
After testing the waters with moderately-size projects rehabbing piers in Manhattan and Brooklyn, in 2007 Trevcon sent shockwaves through the industry by beating out both national and multinational contractors to win the competitive bid for the $30M reconstruction of Pier 25 in Tribeca, owned by Hudson River Park Trust (HRPT). At the same time, HRPT awarded one of those outbid major players to build Pier 26, directly north of Pier 25. The race was on to see which contractor would finish first.
As it turned out, no one could match Trevcon’s prowess in driving deep-foundation piles. Trevcon completed Pier 25 an entire year sooner than the competition finished Pier 26. Trevcon, then an upstart marine contractor from Jersey, had barged into New York Harbor, proved that it could get the job done, and set a new standard for the industry.
The success of Pier 25 led to many more projects along the Hudson River under the visionary leadership of Ron, Sr., from new construction that relied on crane barges to restoration projects using construction divers. During that time, property owners around the city noticed the positive economic impact from HRPT’s revitalization project of the West Side, and New York City’s waterfront construction needs grew. As the drive for waterfront revitalization spread around the city, Trevcon oversaw landmark renewal projects reshaping the urban environment, including at the South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Domino Sugar, and Little Island, to name a few.
This massive waterfront real estate redevelopment in the region did not detract from the marine infrastructure spending by local and state municipalities. Since its start, Trevcon has managed significant infrastructure projects critical to the functioning of the region, not only rebuilding wharfs, train bridges, and bridge pier fenders for the Port of New York and New Jersey but also conducting the largest foundation static load test east of the Mississippi during the construction of the new Mario Cuomo Bridge.
Trevcon has also played a role in some of the region’s most transformative public infrastructure projects. For example, it built and installed the majority of the ferry barges and two ferry homeports as New York City introduced an entirely new form of transportation for millions of city residents. Additionally, when New York City decided to remove its waste and recycling via barge rather than truck, Trevcon helped build the necessary transfer stations throughout the city.
Hurricane Sandy and the damage it caused to the region marked a significant shift for the industry and for Trevcon. A costly reminder of the area’s susceptibility to storm surge flooding, Hurricane Sandy brought in new projects focused on resiliency. Trevcon’s work rebuilding the Rockaway boardwalk and participation in the East Side Resiliency project were some of the region’s major contracts focused on protecting the public and property from rising seas. While resiliency is now a priority in forthcoming waterfront projects, Trevcon is also involved in the North East’s foray into offshore wind projects as a viable alternative energy source.
While these projects only represent a fraction of the work Trevcon has taken on, they demonstrate that as the region continues to reimagine its waterfronts as places to live, play, and move people and goods, Trevcon Construction has been there every step of the way, getting the job done.
Today, as day-to-day management has been passed down from Ron, Sr. to his son, Ronald Treveloni, Jr. – R.T. for short –Trevcon Construction continues to meet the needs of our region’s waterfronts. No longer an underdog, Trevcon is the preeminent marine contractor in the tri-state region, spearheading design-build projects and joint-venturing with multinational contractors on single projects priced well over $100M. The company owns a fleet of cranes and barges and stages them out of its port facility, which was self-built and located on the Arthur Kill waterway in Elizabeth, New Jersey. It boasts over 40 salaried employes and 250+ workers on payroll, forming a talented team of tradespeople, operators, and project managers known in the industry for their expertise and reliability.
Despite this growth and evolution, it is thanks to the vision of Ron Sr. and the continued leadership of RT that Trevcon Construction remains first and foremost a family business, where the decision-making and problem solving are as swift and nimble as they were when the company drove its first pile in the New York Harbor, and where the value proposition to clients and stakeholders writ large remains the highest in the industry.
