The Story of Trevcon Construction: Building the Future of the Waterfront

The story of Trevcon Construction is inseparable from that of the revitalization of New York and New Jersey’s waterfronts over the past 30 years. At the time government and industry were looking to reimagine and reinvest in the region’s waterfronts came Trevcon Construction, a new marine contractor uniquely equipped to make those plans a reality, faster and more efficiently than others in the market.

New Jersey Beginnings

Trevcon Construction was founded in 1987 by Ronald Treveloni, Sr. (Ron Sr.), following years of managing large infrastructure projects for multinational firms. Initially a small utility contractor in New Jersey, the company focused on watermain and sewer construction. However, as projects increasingly required work in coastal waters, Trevcon expanded its expertise—operating from barges, employing union dockbuilders and divers, and driving piles. Treveloni, an engineer from Tufts University says, “Marine Construction is certainly not for everyone…it requires ingenuity…use the tide, the water and the wind, as your friends.”

Trevcon’s first major step into marine construction came in the late 1990s with the rehabilitation of Pier A in Hoboken, NJ, giving new life to a brand-new waterfront lifestyle. Ron Sr. saw an opportunity to bring Trevcon’s growing capabilities across the Hudson River.

Breaking Into Manhattan’s Marine Construction Industry

After several successful pier rehabilitation projects in Manhattan and Brooklyn, Trevcon made a bold statement in 2007 by winning the $30 million reconstruction of Pier 25 in Tribeca, outbidding national and multinational competitors. At the same time, another major contractor was awarded the adjacent Pier 26 project, setting the stage for a head-to-head race to completion. Trevcon’s prowess in driving deep-foundation piles went unmatched and completed Pier 25 a full year ahead of its competitor, setting a new standard for efficiency and expertise in New York’s marine construction industry.

A Driving Force in Waterfront Revitalization

Under Ron Sr.’s leadership, Trevcon expanded its impact along the Hudson River, contributing to major projects such as South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Google’s Pier 57, Domino Sugar, Passenger Ship Terminal, and Little Island. As New York City’s waterfront revitalization efforts accelerated, Trevcon played a key role in reshaping urban spaces into thriving public and commercial destinations.

Trevcon was earning a reputation for taking a potentially very complicated project and making it look easy. For example, Ron Sr. responded to working in unreachable areas below docks by creating and patenting the flexible barge system, the Trevcon-Veyor. It is an agile, precise, and cost-effective solution to stabilize pilings and bulkheads that have been weakened by erosion or other factors. Treveloni speaks to the Trevcon-Veyor’s advantage, “Because it operates from the water without using dock space, it’s not intrusive to the customer’s operations. We’ve used it for several ports to repair or prevent any future damage.” Trevcon’s ingenuity and dedication to meeting the evolving needs of one of the world’s most dynamic cities continues to drive the team forward.

A Leader in Infrastructure Development

Waterfront real estate redevelopment surged and public infrastructure spending remained robust. Amidst these changes, Trevcon has been instrumental in rebuilding wharfs, train bridges, and bridge pier fenders for the Port of New York and New Jersey. Notably, the company conducted the largest foundation static load test east of the Mississippi for the construction of the Mario Cuomo Bridge. Trevcon has also contributed to major public transportation initiatives, including the construction of ferry barges and homeports for New York City’s expanding ferry system. Additionally, the company played a key role in developing waste and recycling transfer stations as the city transitioned to barge-based disposal.

Adapting to a Changing Environment

Hurricane Sandy underscored the region’s vulnerability to storm surges, marking a turning point for waterfront construction. Trevcon responded by leading resilience-focused projects, including the Rockaway Boardwalk reconstruction and the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project. Today, the company continues to advance sustainable initiatives, contributing to offshore wind infrastructure in the Northeast.

A Bright Future

As Trevcon has grown, leadership has transitioned from Ron Sr. to his son, Ronald Treveloni, Jr. (R.T.). Trevcon is now the premier marine contractor in the tri-state area, leading large-scale design-build projects and joint ventures with multinational firms on contracts exceeding $100 million. Operating from its self-built waterfront port facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the company’s fleet of cranes and barges, serving as a staging point, repair shop, licensed recycling facility, for the constant in and out-flow of heavy machinery, ready to mobilize at a moment’s notice. It boasts 250+ employees, forming a talented team of tradespeople, operators, and project managers known in the industry for their expertise and reliability.

Despite its growth, Trevcon remains, at its core, a family business. Guided by the vision of Ron Sr. and the leadership of R.T., the company continues to uphold its commitment to safety, quality, efficiency, and innovation—ensuring that as the region’s waterfronts evolve, Trevcon will be there, building the future.
